Foiled Again

Normally Nicholas naps with little fuss or problem, but on days when we have carefully worked his naps into a schedule that has little flexibility, all hell breaks loose. Today we are going to a birthday party for Alice at 3. Since that is exactly when he usually naps we figured we'd stretch him this morning and do one early afternoon nap. So we put him down an hour ago. Too bad he has spent that entire hour talking and playing in his crib.

So now not only will he be missing his afternoon nap, but he'll have had no naps today. (Well, except 5 minutes on the way home from the zoo.) This should make him a delightful party guest.

  1. 3pm update: He seems to have fallen asleep for about half an hour, which hopefully will help. He'll still probably be a terror by 5:30, but what can you do?

  2. Just be sure to hang out with people who will completely understand. I think THAT is the biggest reason that friends feel "cut out" after someone has a child - our days are scheduled, and scheduled for a reason. When we plan things over nap time (and we all do it!) we understand that some kids will be cranky. Those are simply not the days to take the little guy out to a five star restaurant for dinner!

  3. First, what is a "five-star restaurant?" And how is it different from Chili's?

But yeah, the scheduling factor, and how it influences our lives -- in particular because most of our friends don't have kids -- is probably worth its own well-thought-out post.
