Comprehension

Nicholas still doesn't say any words, but every day he shows that he understands more and more words. I'm sure he understands more words than we realize, but here are a handful that he clearly understands and reliably acts upon:
  • clap
  • high chair
  • dinner/lunch
  • banana
  • bath
  • truck
  • ball
  • blocks
  • shoe
  • diaper
  • bedtime/naptime
  • Mommy
  • Daddy
  • sit down
  • walk
  • up
  • dance
  • bounce/jump
  • bang
  • shake
  • no
  • good job
  • mail (well, this he knows means going downstairs)
  • mailbox (which to him means his toy mailbox)
  • sippy (sippy cup)
  • bottle
He sits down on command, walks you over to his high chair when you say it is time for dinner, shakes a toy when you ask, and can pick up the toy you indicate. Other times he is obviously pondering the statement or request you make, pausing and thinking about it, even if he doesn't end up following it. It is amazing to me how much he understands, given that he can't articulate any words.

  1. It's awesome to take in, isn't it? I am still amazed at the things that Abby is picking up.

    Some good, some camp. :o)

  2. This is all well and good, but we really need to get him started on gerunds soon so he doesn't fall behind. Otherwise he might not get into the right pre-school, which will keep him out of MIT and the Stanford combined MD/JD/MBA/PhD program. And we wouldn't want to deprive the boy of what he wants, would we?
