Nicholas declared at dinner tonight that on Mother's Day all mothers have to eat breakfast in bed. He then very seriously ordered me, "So on Sunday you can't get out of bed. You have to stay in bed and eat breakfast."
Twist my arm.

May
It is May and this year this means only one thing in our household: Nicholas' birthday is coming! I know, it isn't for another 3+ weeks, but it is all Nicholas talks about.
He was so eager to turn the calendar page that he started asking 2 days ahead of time and when we got home on Tuesday night he was insistent that changing the calendar be the first thing we do. I didn't understand why, but humored him. Then as soon as I hung up the calendar, he shouted, "Now it is May! My birthday is in May! It is almost my birthday!" Ah, I see.
This year Nicholas is having his first birthday party beyond the family and he is so excited!
We have invited all his friends from school and apparently all of the preschool set enjoy mini golf as much as Nicholas does. And the place we are going for mini golf is a place that makes its own ice cream so the party includes a homemade icecream cake! Score. And, yes, I am probably as excited about this as Nicholas is, or at least close.
On the day of his actual birthday we will be getting on a cruise ship with Joe's family, a trip that I'm pretty sure Nicholas thinks is one big birthday celebration for him. Ah, to be 4 and the center of the universe.
One thing that makes me happy is that Nicholas' excitement about his upcoming birthday seems to have nothing to do with presents. He hasn't talked about them at all and when people have asked what he wants, he only has one suggestion. Given how acquisitive he was leading up to Christmas, this makes me happy. He seems to be most excited about being the center of attention and having things be all about him. I'm not exactly sure how this is different from usual, but he must think it is.

Allergies?
I am beginning to wonder if Nicholas might have seasonal allergies. He has been rubbing his eyes a lot for the last couple weeks. No goop, only the slightest bit red (and that seems to be after he has rubbed them), but they are clearly bugging him. He hasn't been congested until the last few days (even though I had a bad cold for about 2 weeks), when he has started coughing, but still no runny nose.
I'm mostly just writing this down because this is the closest thing we have to a record of his childhood and it will allow me to track this.

Splinter
We had a saga today with a splinter. Compared to the very real sagas going on all around us today, this is nothing, but I don't have the energy to opine about the state of our world, so let's stick to the splinter here.
I got a voicemail from daycare this afternoon (it isn't an emergency, but please call) letting me know that Nicholas had gotten a splinter but that their policy is not to remove splinters. But they had tweezers I could use if I wanted to come do it myself. So since he is only 200 yards away from my office, I went down the hill to do my motherly duty.
But Nicholas was having nothing to do with it. After 45 minutes of his crying and pulling his hand away whenever I touched it, despite every bribe I could think of, I gave up. He went back to class a complete emotional mess and I went back to work. And called my parents for advice because I remember them removing multiple splinters from my hands over the years.
When we got home I convinced him to let me ice it. Then while Joe held him down, I used a sterilized needle to pull up the skin so I could grab the splinter with the tweezers.
And success!
Nicholas got a car bandaid and lots of praise for being brave (despite the fact that he really wasn't--Joe had to hold him down). And he has been promised ice cream after dinner.
A couple minutes ago he commented that his hand didn't hurt anymore and then said, "Thank you, Mommy, for taking out my splinter. You're a hero!"
These days are numbered, so I'll revel in it now.

Easter 2013
We had a pretty laid-back Easter this year. It was just the 3 of us so we did all the standard Easter things (Easter baskets, coloring eggs, egg hunt, church, bunny cake, yummy dinner), but it was very mellow. I think Nicholas' excitement level way out-did the level of our actual activities. We didn't get any great all-dressed-up Easter shots this year, in part because I decided not to push it. But here are some pictures of our activities:
